Weapon prestige is less a button to press than a decision about what you can do without for a while. If you have built a favourite rifle around a certain optic, barrel, or grip, losing those parts can matter more than the level number suggests. Think about your next few sessions before you commit. Players weighing a regular multiplayer grind against options such as MW4 Bot Lobbies still face the same trade-off: reaching the cap is only the first step, and the gun will feel different after the reset.
Consider What You Will Lose
The moment the prestige prompt appears isn't necessarily the right moment to use it. Prestiging sends that firearm back to its starting level, and any attachments earned through its levels become locked again. You'll need to earn them back in matches. Your other weapons stay as they are, but this one may not suit the build you rely on today. If a camo task needs a particular sight or muzzle, finish that work first or be ready to pause while you level the gun again. That small bit of planning can save a lot of frustration.
Make a Quick Checklist
Before you select the option, run through a quick check: 1) write down the parts your main build depends on; 2) finish any camo task that requires them; 3) set up another dependable class for the matches you'll play while this gun catches up. It sounds simple, but it's easy to click through a milestone and only then notice that your next objective needs a piece of gear you've just lost. Taking a minute here keeps the reset from disrupting your whole session.
Find the Prestige Option
Once the firearm reaches its maximum level, open the multiplayer menu, choose that gun in Gunsmith, and head to its progression screen. That's where the prestige option appears. Read the confirmation screen before accepting: the reset applies to the selected weapon, and it starts over at the base level. In return, you earn a prestige tier. That tier helps with longer-term goals such as mastery camo unlocks and Prestige Master challenges. It won't make the gun stronger right away, so the reward is mainly for players who care about completing those goals.
Choose Your Timing
After the reset, treat the weapon as a fresh project. Use it in matches, rebuild the useful attachments as they become available, and keep a second loadout ready for modes where your usual setup matters. You don't have to prestige every firearm as soon as it reaches the cap; waiting is sensible if you still enjoy its current build. Some players plan out a longer progression run with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 Boosting, while others prefer to earn each level at their own pace. Either way, choose the timing that suits your play style, then go in knowing exactly what you are trading away.
